Pathway to Public Statements

The Quebec Writers’ Federation is a diverse, member-based community whose mandate and activities revolve around the English-language writing and literary life in our province. We support the right of all members to hold and express opinions.

For public statements, an elected Board is empowered to make decisions on behalf of the membership.

The QWF Board evaluates each request for a public statement. Our mandate, values statement, and the criteria below serve as the foundation for all decisions. Any member who wishes to have a matter considered for public statement must present their request in writing to the executive director, who will forward it to the Board of Directors.

Criteria for evaluating requests for public statements:

  1. The urgency or relevance of the issue to our membership compels the QWF to speak with one voice.
  2. The QWF is well positioned to address this issue and has the capacity to take an informed position within an appropriate timeframe.
  3. A statement from the QWF can contribute constructively to public discourse and promote understanding.
  4. The statement poses no legal risk to the organization, and it will not directly or indirectly support a political party or candidate for public office.
  5. The QWF Board agrees on the proposed wording and is confident that the statement represents the values of the organization.
