The LTAC/QWF Mentorships in Literary Translation help promising aspiring and emerging translators make the transition to the next stage of their careers.
A joint initiative of the Quebec Writers’ Federation and the Literary Translators’ Association of Canada/L’Association des traducteurs et traductrices littéraires du Canada (LTAC/ATTLC), the program alternates each year between the Karin Montin LTAC/QWF Mentorship (translating from French to English) and the Jean Antonin Billard LTAC/QWF Mentorship (translating from English to French).

The Karin Montin LTAC/QWF Mentorship in Literary Translation is designed to support an aspiring or emerging translator of literary work into English.
Named for a well-loved member of the LTAC and QWF communities who passed away in August in 2021, the mentorship is offered every other year, starting in 2022.
Karin enjoyed a 35-year career as a freelance translator, editor, and technical writer in a broad range of fields. She also taught translation at the Université de Montréal, Concordia University, McGill University from 1984 to 1991, and was an active tutor for adult literacy programs. A woman of many talents, she was an avid murder mystery reader; a keen enthusiast of crosswords, particularly of the cryptic variety; an uncrowned champion in all manner of trivia, general knowledge and especially word-related board games in both English and French; an accomplished amateur photographer; and a fierce feminist.

Le programme de mentorat Karin Montin ATTLC/QWF en traduction littéraire est conçu pour soutenir un traducteur en herbe ou émergent d’une œuvre littéraire en anglais.
Nommé en l’honneur d’une membre bien-aimée des communautés de l’ATTLC et de la QWF qui est décédée en août 2021, le mentorat est offert tous les deux ans, à compter de 2022.
Karin a mené pendant 35 ans une carrière de traductrice, de rédactrice et de rédactrice technique indépendante dans un large éventail de domaines. Elle a également enseigné la traduction à l’Université de Montréal, à l’Université Concordia et à l’Université McGill de 1984 à 1991, et a été un tuteur actif pour les programmes d’alphabétisation des adultes. Femme aux multiples talents, elle était une lectrice assidue de romans policiers, une fervente adepte des mots croisés—en particulier ceux de type cryptique—, une championne incontestée de toutes sortes de jeux de société, de connaissances générales et surtout de jeux de mots, tant en anglais qu’en français, une photographe amatrice accomplie et une féministe acharnée.

Le mentorat Jean Antonin Billard en traduction littéraire vise à soutenir les traducteurs et traductrices aspirant.es et emergent.es prometteurs.trices d’œuvres littéraires vers le français dans leur cheminement vers la prochaine étape de leur carrière.
Nommé en l’honneur d’un membre bien-aimé de la communauté de l’ATTLC qui est décédé en 2016, le mentorat est décerné tous les deux ans à compter de 2023.
Né en 1930, à Tours en France, Jean Antonin Billard se met très tôt à l’écoute d’autres voix outre-frontières. L’anglais et l’espagnol lui servent de passeport. Nord et Sud, Est et Ouest l’attirent. Après de nombreux voyages et des séjours studieux en Angleterre et en Espagne, il se fixe à la croisée des chemins du Nouveau Monde : au Québec, en 1953. Au cinéma qu’il enseigne comme dans les livres qu’il lit, c’est la poésie qui traduit le mieux son désir d’une vie multiple et différente, dans un monde qui annule de plus en plus ce désir même.

The Jean Antonin Billard ATTLC/QWF Mentorship is designed to support an emerging or aspiring translator of literary work into French.
Named for a beloved member of the LTAC community who passed away in 2016, the mentorship is offered every other year, starting in 2023.
Born in 1930 in Tours, France, Jean Antonin Billard began reaching out to voices across borders at an early age. English and Spanish served as his passport; North and South, East and West attracted him. After numerous trips to England and Spain, he settled at the crossroads of the New World: in Quebec, in 1953. Through the films he taught as well as through the books he read, it was always poetry that best translated his desire for an open and expansive life, in a world which increasingly cancels this very desire.
