This workshop offers a hands-on, noses-in-our-books approach to the fine art of writing for young people. You’ll be asked to read with care, write with abandon, and analyze your own works and those of others. The practical aspects of a writing career in children’s literature are also addressed: finding publishers, crafting your pitch, creating and maintaining relationships with editors, and knowing the current children’s book market.
You’ll be encouraged to read excerpts from your works in progress; during in-class writing, you may discover seeds for new projects. Although physically distanced via Zoom, we’ll create a convivial community dedicated to our common interest: the rich, fascinating—and sometimes subversive—art of children’s literature.
Our first session together will focus on your aspirations and inspirations. Bring your favourite children’s book to show (if it’s got pictures, better still) and be prepared to tell us why you love it. You can also familiarize yourself with my practice: raquelriverawashere.com.
