*This workshop will take place over two one-day intensive sessions to allow participants to work on their editing at home between sessions and get feedback during the second session.*
This workshop is open to all levels of writers. Limited to 12 participants.
Fewer and fewer publications have rigorous editing processes in place, which means that writers who know how to polish their work stand a better chance of being published.
This workshop will teach participants how to see their own work with fresh eyes using tips, tricks, and hands-on exercises. Participants will get a chance to edit their own work and receive feedback on their editing.
Week one:
- A review of the different types of editing, including substantive and stylistic editing, copyediting, fact checking, and proofreading
- A look at the difference between editing someone else’s work and editing your own work
- Tips to help you see your own work with an editor’s eye
- A deep dive into substantive and stylistic editing, which includes work on your own material
- An editing assignment to take home and work on for week two
Week two:
- A review of the editing assignment from week one
- A deeper look at copyediting and fact checking, which includes in-class exercises
- A list of typical errors to look out for
- Tips on how to “kill your darlings”
- Ways to incorporate your inner editor (not your inner critic!) into your writing practice
- A review of available tools to help with the editing process.
Registered participants must submit a piece of writing they wish to edit (2500 words maximum) by March 7 to workshops(at)qwf(dot)org.
